New to the New Zealand Workplace
Finding your way forward in a new workplace culture
Are you new to the New Zealand workplace and feeling like you’re missing something? Struggling to figure out what is happening in meetings? Not getting as much direction or feedback on your work as you would like?
You are not alone - I’ve been there. I moved to New Zealand after a successful career in the United States. I found it very difficult, and I had no idea why. Kiwis speak English, this is a democracy, and they were a British colony, just like the U.S. I didn’t give New Zealand workplace culture a moment’s thought when I started my first role here. I brought my skills to my workplace expecting the same kind of respect and success I had had in the U.S., and I failed miserably.
When my next job came along, I took an entirely different approach to leadership, communication, building trust and conflict. It made all the difference. Not only was I productive and respected by my team, but I had learned a different way of working through trial and error. I got out of my comfort zone and into the Kiwi workplace, and I now support people who are trying to do that too.

Looking for a safe space to talk about the challenges you are having at work? I’m hosting a free meet up to talk about the things no one talks about. It is open to anyone looking to have a supportive conversation about working in New Zealand.
This is my effort to create community for those of us who have come to New Zealand and are finding it not so easy to find success at work. Whether you feel stuck in your professional life in New Zealand, or you are thinking about leaving the country because your professional life is intolerable, I can help you discover the path to success. Living in New Zealand is amazing. Working in New Zealand can be amazing too.
What we'll do in the virtual meet up:
We'll get to know each other a bit.
I'll do a little presentation about cultural agility.
We'll do a poll on what the group wants to talk about.
We'll discuss the chosen topic either as a group or in breakouts, depending on numbers.
I will ask you for feedback.
This will be a safe space - supportive, enabling and uplifting. You can share as much or as little as you want.

- ERIN MEYER, THE CULTURE MAP
My parents emigrated from India to the United States in the early 1970s. I watched them learn to live and work in their new home. My husband and I came to New Zealand in 2016, and now our daughter watches us learn to live and work in New Zealand. After coming here, I held two different roles before starting my coaching practice to help people fulfill their potential at work. Now, I support people around the world. I designed this coaching engagement specifically for people who are new to the New Zealand workplace.
It is not easy to start a new job in a new country. Together, we will find your way forward to success.
